Yoga
Yoga is an ancient practice that originated on the Indian Subcontinent in South Asia. Yoga includes a series of postures having spiritual significance, as well as breathwork, chanting, and meditation. There are many different kinds of Yoga, and for instance, there are over 70 different ways to chant “Om,” the universal sound.
Yoga in Western cultures is associated with the New Age movement, and can be found at studios and wellness centers throughout the United States. Yoga in the West is often associated mainly as a form of exercise, and for gaining flexibility and suppleness in movement. Many people practice Yoga as a form of “Movement Therapy” to relax the mind, reduce stress, and ease the body simultaneously. Yoga is classified as a “Mind-Body Intervention” in the CAM system.
